Chef Michael Smith will host festivities in Charlottetown

Chef Michael Smith

One of Canada’s most popular chefs will host the festivities at the 19th annual P.E.I. International Shellfish Festival this September.

Festival organizers have announced that chef Michael Smith will be front and

centre when the festival returns to the Charlottetown event grounds for four days of shellfish, shuckers, chefs and East Coast entertainment Sep. 18 to 21.

“You can expect many opportunities to get up close and personal with one of Canada’s best-known chefs, P.E.I.’s own Chef Michael,” said festival chairman Liam Dolan.

“He’ll be on stage each day teaching you the ins and outs of cooking with shellfish, signing cookbooks and having lots of laughs.”

Smith, who’s featured on the Food Network, is looking forward to fulfilling his role at the festival.

“I’m proud of our festival’s success,” said Smith.

“I’m thrilled to host one of the best food festivals on the planet right here at home and can’t wait to welcome the world again this year.”

Smith will host the largest signature event of the P.E.I. Fall Flavours Festival, Feast and

Frolic, which kicks off the shellfish festival on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Smith, known for his high-energy, interactive style of presentation, has some advice for people planning to attend that event.

“Bring your A-game, it’s a lot more than just a dinner.”

The chefs and students of the Culinary Institute of Canada have a delectable four-course shellfish feast planned for that event.

Guests will also enjoy tasting farm-raised Island oysters during the oyster grower of the year reception.

Smith will also host the Garland Canada International Chef Challenge.

During that challenge, 12 top chefs will compete in elimination rounds, creating dishes highlighting Island shellfish for the $10,000 grand prize.

That competition is by invitation only and one spot is dedicated for an Island chef. The winner of the Savour Food & Wine show’s local food award will receive an automatic entry into the competition.

The Savour Food and Wine shows will take place on May 22.

The festival takes place under a big white tent at the Charlottetown Event Grounds.

Chefs and shuckers travel from afar to compete in culinary competitions and oyster shucking competitions vying to take home cash prizes and the title of P.E.I. Shellfish Festival champion.

Local chefs, shuckers and bartenders take part in the festivities at the P.E.I. potato seafood chowder competition, Shiny Sea oyster shucking competition and Mott’s Best Caesar in Town competition.

Over $25,000 in cash prizes are handed out during the festival.

The festival has just received a financial boost from the federal government of $105,000 to support programming and marketing efforts.

Tickets for the festival are now on sale.
