Alanna Gauthier is cheered by students at Central Queens School in Hunter River after being recognized with the P.E.I. Home and School Federation’s Extra Mile Award as part of National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week.

Teachers Judy DesRoches and Alanna Gauthier have been recognized with the P.E.I. Home and School Federation’s Extra Mile Award.

The award recognizes individuals who exemplify going the extra mile, over and above the call of duty.

Each year, Teacher and School Staff Appreciation Week (Feb. 9-14) offers an opportunity to celebrate teachers and staff in schools across P.E.I., Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Alan McIsaac said Friday.

“Teachers and school staff consistently go above and beyond to help our students achieve and I hope everyone will join me in thanking them for their dedication,” said McIsaac.

“Take a few minutes to thank a teacher or school staff member for the work they do to support our students each day.”

DesRoches is an educational assistant at Mischouche Consolidated School. She has been described as lifelong learner and a champion for the truly inclusive model of education that we strive for.

Gauthier is a Grade 1 teacher at Central Queens Elementary School in Hunter River. She goes the extra mile by being a role model for students, leading by example, and instilling values such as gratitude and respect for others.

“Parents and students are encouraged to thank teachers and staff for all they do to guide the learning of all students from kindergarten to Grade twelve in our education system,” said Pam Montgomery, president of the P.E.I. Home and School Federation. “Our two Extra Mile Award winners are wonderful examples of how teachers and staff help students learn and achieve.”

Does "going the extra mile" mean they teach kids how to count change back from a dollar without a calculator?
