Cineplex Cinemas Charlottetown is scheduled to open in the former Empire Theatres location Friday. Cineplex Cinemas Summerside were to open later Thursday.
Moviegoers in Prince Edward Island will see a new name on the marquee this weekend when they venture out to the theatre.
Cineplex, Canada’s largest cinema company, has assumed operation of the former Empire Theatres locations in both Charlottetown and Summerside.
Cineplex Cinemas Charlottetown is scheduled to open Friday. Cineplex Cinemas Summerside open today.
Twenty-four Empire Theatres locations in Atlantic Canada and two in Ontario were acquired by Cineplex.
The Ontario-based company has said the takeover won’t affect prices in the foreseeable future.
And moviegoers will still get a break on tickets on Tuesdays, a spokesman for the company says.
Mike Langdon, director of communications at Cineplex Entertainment, says the company is excited about expanding into Atlantic Canada.
“We are really excited to get started and to be opening these theatres under the Cineplex banner and we will be working really hard to provide our guests with a great experience,” Langdon said.
The company told The Guardian in an interview for a previous story that they will honour all Empire gift cards and movie money for six months after the sale has been finalized, which would mean February.
