Seventeen of the best folk musicians, recordings and producers in the country received Canadian Folk Music Awards on the weekend, and two of them are Islanders.
The 17 award recipients were selected from some 86 finalists, pared down from the original 451 submissions received this year.
Catherine MacLellan of Summerside and now working out of Burlington, Ont., received the English songwriter of the year award for Silhouette.
Rose Cousins, originally from P.E.I. and now based in Halifax, N.S., won the contemporary singer of the year title for We Have Made A Spark.
The awards were established in 2005 “as a way of showcasing the diverse and changing character of a truly Canadian style of music that remains rooted in tradition and the telling of a community's story,” said the awards’ founder, Grit Laskin.
Cousins has two shows coming up this week: Nov. 23 and 24 at the Mack in Charlottetown as part of the Sobeys LIVE @ the Centre series.
