Conductor James Mark is retiring from the P.E.I. Symphony Orchestra at the end of this season. Mark has been music director for the PEISO for more than 12 years.

A news release announcing Mark's retirement was posted to the symphony's Facebook page this morning.

Mark will continue as music director for the remainder of the season; his retirement is effective October 2013.

"Dr. Mark will retain a strong connection to the orchestra and will return for special engagements from time to time," states the release.

"The rest of this 45th season of the P.E.I. Symphony will be a celebration of the incredible contribution Dr. Mark has made since becoming music director in 2000, and the wonderful music created under his direction."

The symphony's next concert is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown.
