The CBC is dropping its popular but long-contentious U.S. imports Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!

The public broadcaster says the supper-hour game shows will not return as part of the CBC-TV's fall schedule after contracts expire this summer.

A spokesman says CBC will announce replacement series at the network's fall launch next week.

The chop comes as the broadcaster copes with hefty budget cuts that it says has also forced them to shelve Battle of the Blades, Redemption Inc., Michael: Tuesdays & Thursdays  and Being Erica.

Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy were brought in as lead-ins to Canadian shows under previous CBC English Services boss Richard Stursberg.

Last year, Stursberg's replacement Kirstine Stewart said those shows had successfully brought soaring ratings to the broadcaster and that it was time to weed U.S. imports out of the CBC.

Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Dragon's Den were the only shows I watched. I can't believe that you dropped 2 of these shows from your Fall Schedule. Do you realize how many people enjoyed these shows? They were shows that your viewers could play along with. You should have dropped George Strombolopolus (unsure of spelling) instead. I am very, very disappointed with CBC for making this decision.

If you are buying blocks of british shows? bring back ON THE BUSES, Mrs Bucket, As time goes by, Vicar of Dibley and Ballykissangel THEY were extremely entertaining. never missed an episode, and could watch them over and over again... Depicts a true life, believable type of entertainment. Way to go CBC. and dont lose BOOMER .. the best weather man EVER..

Understandably if a show doesn't have the viewership, removing it is understandable. I watch COMPASS , and then tape if I am not going to be available to watch my beloved Coronation Street. So many of us would be mortified if that went off the air... ( Brits and Canadians alike).

I am sad to hear this, everyone loves Jepordy. I am glad Coronation Street is not being cut, I love it and it seems like it is very popular. I am sad that there is only one episode per night now, it seems more sense to give us two per night and try and catch up with Britain.

I was under the impression it cost less to buy shows than to make shows. These shows are a tv staple, and likely bring in a lot of ad revenue and viewership. If CBC is going to get rid of imported shows all together, why is Coronation Street not on the chopping block? Every night after the news its a race to find the remote to change the channel before hearing even one bar of that dreadful tortured cat sound.

We don't watch many CBC shows and I think we'll be watching even less in the fall. CBC productions used to be worthwhile watching but not any more.

Hey CBC - why not cancel "Corination Street" - JUST KIDDING - Canadians would be in a total uproar - it would give the Harper Govt a monumental crisis like none ever seen before. Maybe they'd re-instate the recent 10% cut to the CBC with an extra 5-10% just to get Canadians off their back! Might be worth a try, eh?

I agree 100% with the two comments below. Get rid of Steven and Chris, or Cornation Street. Or even cut Cornation Street down to 1 new episode a day, 2 is a little too much. My dad will not be very happy when he heres about this! CBC is going down the tubes. The only shows I ever really watch on their are the news, RMR, Jepeordy, and Wheel of Fortune, sometimes I watch Land and Sea after the news if it's an interesting episode. They have way too many crappy TV shows that no one watches. I miss the disney movies they used to play every Sunday night, why don't they bring that back?

You can still watch them on CBS, but this is sad. First, HNIC can't afford to renew the contract for playing the original Hockey night in Canada Theme, and now we're losing all these shows. I wonder how much they have set aside to keep those two goofballs, Steven and Chris on in the afternoons. Get your priorities straight CBC. That's not a discriminatory pun either. I mean, it makes more sense to keep prime time shows than mid-afternoon shows. I suppose they've just had funding cut from the Federal Government too, so that doesn't help.
