Mike Carson's recent article in The Guardian ('Harmonization gets a thumbs up', The Guardian, Dec. 2, 2009) gives the results of a survey on HST that the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce conducted among its members.
One of the results was that 71 per cent of business owners favoured the HST. Chamber president Rudy Smith says consumers aren't in favour of it though.
The article says "Smith agreed it is a sensitive issue and the province needs to negotiate relief for individuals who are adversely affected by the tax change."
The article also states: "70 per cent (of chamber members surveyed) want exemptions for the business community on the input of heat and electrical costs." Funny, they didn't ask whether business owners wanted those same exemptions for all Islanders.
Maybe they don't care if we (their customers) lose any disposable income from the harmonization of the PST and GST. Or maybe they would prefer everyone to shop somewhere else?

Does chamber care about consumers?
