Why not complete Spencer Drive?

Editor:

For years, the residents of Sherwood, primarily north of Pine Drive and east of Mount Edward Road, have been using a private road, Charlottetown Mall access, as a travel route to University Avenue.

With the creation of the new intersection and the traffic light at Highway 1 and Spencer Drive two years ago, it was hoped that Spencer Drive would be extended to Mount Edward Road to provide a city street for vehicle traffic. Such has not been the case and the four-lane highway behind the Superstore becomes a dead end. Furthermore, for those cars approaching from the east, traffic wends it way past the cinema, where only for the grace of God, no one has been hit or killed as people exit the theatre and cross the street to the theatre parking lot.

With federal infrastructure funding now available for many projects, would it not be an opportunity for the city to complete Spencer Drive and create an access for vehicle traffic from University Avenue to Mount Edward Road?

Should the private road, for whatever reason, ever be closed, Belvedere Avenue or the bypass would be the alternatives.

Residents of Sherwood, is it time to talk to our councillors?
