MORELL – A devastating fire early today has destroyed a woodworking shop in Morell.

Four fire departments and 35 firefighters battled the blaze. Firefighters and RCMP are still on the scene this morning.

Only the north wall of the shop is left standing with the rest of the large workshop collapsed into charred embers.

It appears the nearby house escaped any damage as firefighters battled the flames in bitterly cold temperatures in an effort to save the residence.

Morell Fire Department received the call at 12:48 a.m. The call came in as an automatic fire alarm.

Morell firefighters were assisted by St. Peters, Mount Stewart, and East River fire departments.

Joe Dunphy CustomWoodworking was a long-established business in the community, with an Island-wide reputation for creating custom-made kitchen cabinets, cupboards and furniture.

Fire Marshal Dave Rossiter is on the scene.

The shop is located on the St. Peters Highway on the west end of the village. Traffic on route 2 was moving freely this morning.
