Skip Brett Gallant and his Charlottetown Curling Club rink captured its fourth straight provincial junior title by defeating Summerside's Sam Ramsay's rink 6-3 Wednesday at the provincial Pepsi junior championship in Charlottetown.
The Gallant rink scored the decisive marker by stealing a point in the sixth end to go up 4-2, a lead it would never relinquish.
The turning point came in the fifth end when the Gallant rink took two points with the hammer to jump
out in front 3-2 after having trailed 2-1 after the
Ramsay rink stole one in the fourth.
Gallant said the steal in the sixth was when his team was able to take control.
"That kind of turned the game in our favour from that point on."
The victory means Gallant's team, which also includes Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, newcomer Jamie Danbrook and coached by Gallant's parents Peter and Kathie Gallant, will move on to play in the M&M Canadian Juniors scheduled for Jan. 31-Feb. 8, taking place in Salmon Arm, B.C.
Danbrook, from B.C. and a member of the 2008 provincial champion team there, recently replaced Alex MacFadyen, who was a member of the three previous championship teams from Charlottetown. MacFadyen is attending school in Nova Scotia and is a member of the 2009 provincial champion team there.
The game started with the hammer belonging to the Ramsay rink but it was blanked out in the end.
The Gallant rink stole a point in the second to take the lead 1-0 but the Ramsay rink was able to tie it in the third and take a 2-1 lead in the fourth with a steal.
The Gallant rink went on to score two in the fifth to jump out ahead and stole another in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Gallant rink stole two more in the eighth and coasted to the win.
The Ramsay rink played well but his team was able to take advantage when the opportunity was there, Gallant said.
"We knew they would be a really tough team. We just got a few breaks and were able to capitalize on their mistakes."
His teammates deserve a lot of credit for their play, Gallant said.
"My team played very well in front of me."
His team has one thing in mind for the Canadian championship, Gallant said.
"We only have one goal. Our goal is to win."
The Gallant rink placed second last year and third the previous year at the national championships.
