An Island Petroleum delivery truck overturned into the ditch on the Hyde Point Road in Meadowbank Tuesday.
The driver told RCMP that he had a full load of fuel oil on board and was not able to make it around a 90-degree turn at the bottom of a slope on the road. The accident occurred about 11 a.m. and the driver was not seriously hurt.
The vehicle held approximately 2,000 gallons (7,500 litres) of furnace oil, said Ron Ryder, spokesperson for the P.E.I. Department of the Environment.
"A very small amount of oil leaked out around the dome covers of the truck," said Ryder.
"Most of it remained in the vehicle."
A company called GNL Environmental came to the scene, along with an empty tanker from Island Petroleum, and the oil was pumped to the new truck.
"(The company) was talking about cleaning up the snow but we are going back (today) just to see what will be there," said Ryder.
The snow cushioned the vehicle and limited the damage to the vehicle and the driver, said Constable Matthew Chartrand of Queens District RCMP.
"It had a full load on so as it turned the fuel itself ended up adding extra weight to the back end which caused it to slide into the ditch and from there gravity took its place and kind of turned it over," said Chartrand.
Chartrand said that when the overturned truck was turned upright back on the road, its engine started, suggesting that it suffered little damage.

There are 4.55 litres in a Canadian gallon, so it appears that the writer's conversion is incorrect as 2000 gallons would be 9100 litres, not 7500 or maybe more than a little leaked out, 1600 litres.

Seriously people.. Cant you find something else to complain about then the conversion rate of fuel in an accident?

    Lets reword it..

A FULL TRUCK.. now no need to have hissy fits about the conversion amount.

I feel compelled to point out to all those people who criticised the schools being closed yesterday that if those people had their way, that could have been a bus full of kids.

This could of had a more tragic ending, thankfully the driver was not hurt, and most of the oil was pumped into the other truck.

We need to be more careful on these slippy island roads this time of year.

I agree with you trevor John.

Some people have nothing better to do but complain about everything. I am glad the kids stayed home. I was able to be home that day (most of it) and enjoyed spending quality time with the kids. Something our generations are missing out on.

People need to realize that WE are the parents. NOT the TV, Not the school, not the babysitters and its our responsibity.

There are 3.785 liters in a US gallon, so it appears that the writer should have specified if the measurement was in Canadian or US gallons as 200 gal (US) would be 7570 litres.
