HALIFAX - The Nova Scotia government says the number of visitors to the province dropped by three per cent in the first eight months of this year compared with the same period in 2007.
The numbers for August were virtually the same with more than 335,500 visitors to the province.
For the first eight months of the year, about 1.4 million people visited Nova Scotia.
The government says in August, there were 10 per cent more visitors from overseas compared with the same month a year earlier.
But there were 17 per cent fewer visitors from the United States in August.
Tourism Minister Bill Dooks says the province held its own in August and he is predicting a strong fall.

You would think that with tourism down in Nova Scotia, the provincial government would make the province more visually appealing. I am ashamed by comments from visitors from Ontario and the United States regarding the neglect of our province. The highway median and along the sides of the highway (at least from the airport toTruro) are overgrown with weeds. Not only are they visually unappealing but also dangerous as they block oncoming traffic on the highway ramps. It appears that who ever has the authority to oversee the province's image has neglected to fulfill their duties.
