Topics :
The Guardian , Canada Games , Lydia Banks , Iceland , Egypt

Beginning Thursday, Feb. 17, The Guardian will be presenting a new bi-weekly feature by and about Island young people.

Every two weeks, Teen Scene, which will run on page C1, as well as on The Guardian's website, will pose a different question or topic to 11 Island high school students.

One response will be featured in The Guardian, and all will appear online, along with pictures of the participating students.

Today's featured writer in the print edition is Lydia Banks from Grace Christian school. She writes, "The Canada Games can be a stepping stone for promising athletes to elevate their skills to the Olympic level. Participating in the Games may even help any student athletes to get accepted into universities that they apply to."

Joelene Spencer, who is The Guardian's Newspapers in Education marketing co-ordinator, says the regular feature is designed to give youth a voice in what's going on in their backyard and around the world.

"For example, the first topic is the Canada Games and what the students think the reaction will be from the province, the athletes and the spectators," she said.

"Upcoming topics will range from the current situation in Egypt to lighter issues such as what they would do with a million dollars."

Spencer says Teen Scene offers something for all age groups.

"Not only is Teen Scene a benefit to the participating students to improve their writing skills and feel their voice is being heard, they are also acting as a voice for their peer group. In addition, it provides an insight for adult readers to see what's important to Island youth."

Managing editor Gary MacDougall said he welcomes the start up of the youth forum.

"Island poet Milton Acorn once wrote, 'The Island's small, every opinion counts.' I truly believe he's right, and surely some of the most important voices that need to be heard are the voices of our young people. After all, they carry the sounds of the future."
