A young girl from Bonshaw has been named the gutsiest Canadian by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of Canada.
Tiffany MacPhee, 14, was given the honour after she was nominated by her mother, Annie.
The foundation began the search in September for the Canadian who bravely faces inflammatory bowel disease and also is making a difference in their community and the lives of others.
Annie MacPhee says Tiffany has been living with Crohn's disease for five years and from the beginning she has bravely gone through feeding tube treatments and even weekly needles.
MacPhee says Tiffany has spent many holidays missing out on the treats because she was going through a feeding tube treatment at the time.
But she said her daughter has always taken charge of her disease by trying to understand as much as possible about it and also making sure her friends and schoolmates know what it is all about.
Tiffany started collecting refundables from her neighbours last year as a way to raise funds for Crohn's and Colitis research.
The bottle drive has become permanent since she sent out fliers. She raised $1,000 in just six months last year. The total is $800 so far this year.
Tiffany said she started out picking up the refundables from people but now a lot of them are delivered to her.
"One morning I got up and saw one man dropping off 10 bags in our front yard," she said.
Tiffany said it is a lot of work but she is glad to be raising money for research.
"I want to know where Crohn's and Colitis is from and I'm sure everyone else does too."
Being named the gutsiest Canadian, Tiffany not only receives recognition for her accomplishments, she also gets a new TV and a plaque.
A research grant at the foundation will also be named in her honour.
Crohn's and Colitis affects more than 200,000 Canadians.
