Three Island lawyers have been named to the Queen's Counsel.
The appointment of Kathleen Loo Craig, North Bedeque; E.W. Scott Dickieson, Charlottetown; and Susan M. Robinson, Tryon were announced Friday by P.E.I. Attorney General Gerard Greenan.
In Prince Edward Island, the Q.C. designation is presented annually to lawyers who have distinguished themselves through their careers and their contribution to the public. Candidates are considered based on characteristics including professional integrity, good character, expertise, leadership qualities and community service.
"All of the individuals named to Queen's Counsel today are very deserving of this honour and I am proud to support their appointments." said the attorney general.

Ugh, it's not an honour bestowed by the people. How about you read up on it before criticizing either the current party in power or the people who receive said honour. It is better to refrain from speaking and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt - Lincoln.

With no disrespect to these people. Are there any lawyers who aren't QC...what are the qualifications other than supporting the current elected party.

I'm serious..can someone explain this process.

    Thank you.

And they are named primarily for services to the Liberal Party of PEI.

Although the title Q.C. is meaningless it looks awfully good on the law firm's letterhead and each firm thinks it ought to have at least one, or, more happily, one Q.C. named by the Liberals and one named by the Conservatives.

Attempts to abolish title Q.C. have been made over the years in more enlightened jurisdictions such as Manitoba. However, as soon as the government changed the meaningless title was brought back.

Little bits of patronage die hard, obviously. But it is a mistake for the public to give any recognition to such obvious personal favoritism by the government in power.

If reading the above makes you slightly more cynical about politics and the law on the Island, you should be.

My we are a jealous lot. Congratulations to those nominated. Every province appoints QCs and in most cases they are of the same party that is in power. Get over it folks. Better yet, get an education, become a lawyer and youy too can have an appointment. merry Christmas

I find It quite ironic that Garth Staples ( who ran for the conservatives unsuccessfully) is pointing out peoples political back grounds.

He himself beat on every door he could find to try and become a senator, yet he has the nerve to question a QC appointment?

His own party made a large number of appointments to QC, however i dont recall ever seeing Mr. Staples questioning those appointments.

Do you enjoy playing politics Mr. Staples, or do you just have too much time on your hands?
