ALBERTON - Holland College will announce today it is establishing a full-time campus in Alberton with satellite offices in Tignish and O'Leary, The Guardian has learned.
Premier Robert Ghiz and Holland College president Dr. Brian McMillan will be making the multimillion-dollar announcement during a news conference in Alberton this afternoon.
In November's throne speech, the province announced plans for the new college campus.
"My government will partner with Holland College to establish a regional training centre in West Prince offering a range of permanent and rotating programs to support the economic and social development of the region," the throne speech read.
Ongoing programs at the centre will include trades programs, adult education and post-secondary preparation courses. The college will also provide rotating post-secondary programs, including health care, business management and information technology, at sites in Tignish and O'Leary.
Alberton Mayor Mike Murphy was beaming with excitement Tuesday night.
"It's awesome news for all of West Prince," said Murphy. "It's a great fit for Alberton. It's a win-win for all the communities."
The announcement will take place at the Canadian Mental Health Building in Alberton at 1:30 p.m.
Last month, Alberton advised the college it would provide land free of charge if the college picked Alberton to set up shop.
The college is providing a licensed practical nursing program in O'Leary and a business administration program and adult education in Tignish.
The college has already confirmed a small business manager program and the second year of the business administration program would be offered next year in Tignish.

Great news! Holland College is to be commended for its foresight. However, it is somewhat ironic in that they (HC) had a presence in West Prince for some years and in its wisdom decided to concentrate on Charlottetown, withdrawing from both West Prince and Summerside. Full circle or what? It is a positive move, but coming on the heels of a major fundraising announcement, it would seem they want the public to underwrite the cost.
Oh well, we'll pay one way or another whether it comes directly out of our pockets or from tax revenues. -

You have to remember on PEI people brag about their ignorance.
Lack of education is a badge of honour.
Education means elitism means corruption
Don't want to be confused with an educated person.
