Residents of Idlewheels Trailer Park, located near the intersection of Allen Street and Mount Edward Road in Charlottetown, have a right to be upset. Their home has been rezoned to allow for the construction of condominiums, so it appears it'll be just a matter of time before they receive eviction notices.
The owner of the property first approached city council to have the property rezoned this past February. There was a public meeting where council heard a lot of opposition, since people would have to sell or relocate their trailers. Council rejected the owner's proposal.
When the owner appealed and the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) held a hearing, residents said they were unaware of what was going on until after IRAC ruled in the developer's favour. The city had a representative at the appeal but if IRAC doesn't hear from residents, the odds are that the developer will win the case. The city should have alerted residents to what was going on through a flyer or news release, so they could have expressed their concerns.
