EDINBURG, Texas - A man who shot and killed a Manitoba couple in their holiday home in Texas 25 years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

Arturo Almaguer (ah-MONG'-gehr) must serve 15 years behind bars before he can apply for parole.

On Monday, a jury convicted the 44-year-old of capital murder.

Evan Squires, 70, and his wife Wilda Squires, 65, of Minnedosa were found dead in their mobile home in Weslaco, Texas, in November 1988.

Police found feces on the floor and were able to collect enough skin and blood cells to create a DNA profile.

Authorities said they got a match in 2011 when Almaguer was arrested on an unrelated offence in Michigan.
