WASHINGTON - The Kennedy Center in Washington is planning a major festival showcasing the artists of Spain and Portugal and will produce its own first new musical during the 2014-15 season.
On Tuesday, the centre is announcing an ambitious slate of theatre, dance and music totalling more than 2,000 performances beginning this fall.
The new musical, "Little Dancer," is scheduled to premiere in October. It's inspired in part by an Edgar Degas sculpture at the National Gallery of Art. It features a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, the creators behind Broadway's "Ragtime." The show is directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman.
In 2015, "Iberian Suite: Arts Remix Across Continents" will showcase the cultures of Spain and Portugal, along with their influence around world.
