CENTRAL BEDEQUE - One of P.E.I.'s most historic landmarks is finding a new life.
After more than 110 years as a family business and a fixture in the community, the Callbeck family announced Thursday that they have donated the original Callbeck store in Central Bedeque to East Prince Holdings, a non-profit community development organization.
The organization will take ownership of the building for the nominal sum of one dollar.
"This building has been an important part of our family's history and was a focal point for the people of this area," said Bill Callbeck.
"We are delighted to see that it will be redeveloped for new uses, and continue to serve the people of East Prince. Although we had other opportunities to sell the building, we believe East Prince Holdings offers the best opportunity to maximize the future potential of the facility."
Once called "the largest country store in Prince Edward Island," the Callbeck store carried a range of merchandise, including groceries, building supplies, furniture and hardware. The store was established in 1899, and attracted customers from across the province.
"Although this is the end of one era, it marks the beginning of a new and exciting era for this part of the province," said Callbeck.
East Prince Holdings will be preparing a development concept for the 35,000-square-foot facility in the coming months. It will also be seeking input from the community for potential uses. Currently, an office supply, interior decorating company and gym are located in the facility.
Doug McMurdo of East Prince Holdings said he is excited about the opportunity to breathe new life into the facility and the surrounding communities.
"This facility has made a significant economic contribution to the area in past years," he said.
"I am confident that it can continue to contribute to the economy of the area in the coming years."
McMurdo paid tribute to the Callbeck family for its generosity.
"The Callbeck family has always been a strong supporter of the community," he said.
"This donation reflects the commitment they have always made to rural Prince Edward Island."
East Prince Holdings has successfully developed and operated the former Campbell and Burns processing facility in Central Bedeque.
Today there are over 70 people working out of the building.
