NORTHPORT - The spring lobster fishery wraps up today but many fishermen have already landed at least some of their gear.
All gear must be out of the water by midnight tonight, June 30.
While numbers are not yet compiled, Wayne MacKinnon, communications officer with the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development, said landings might end up being up a little on the north side and down a bit on the south side.
"The south side, they were high in May, but they fell off in June," MacKinnon noted.
Jack Quinn with Mariners Seafood in Montague suggested landings should be at least on par on the north side. He said fishers have benefitted from a price improvement this year.
"I think the fishermen are happy; I think they are happier than they had been," Quinn said.
Fisherman Bob Kinch started returning traps to port in Northport on Monday and said he will bring his final 100 traps ashore tomorrow.
He said he was pleased with his catch, suggesting it was up a little over last year, but he admitted he had been hoping for higher prices.
Kinch said there were some positive signs this season.
"I never saw so many markets in my life," he said, and added catches stayed good right to the end.
He is not concerned about a possible trap reduction next year, suggesting that will help average the catch out over the entire season better and reduce operating costs.
The shore price improved as the season progressed, starting out at $2.75 a pound for canners and $3.25 to $3.50 a pound for markets. Fishers were receiving around $3.25 and $3.75 a pound for canners and markets respectively.
What the price averages out at won't be known until all the numbers have been compiled.
MacKinnon said there seems to be good movement of product out of fish plants this year, which he suggested reflects a gradual recovery in the economy.

How would Quinn know if the fisherman were happy with the price when very few fishers sold to his new polar seafood company. Most fishermen caught most of their lobster in the first 3 weeks when they were receiving 2.75 canners and 3.25 for markets. The only people that are happy would be the pei processors.
