Company celebrates 25 years of holding telethon for Glace Bay Food Bank

GLACE BAY - Officials at the Glace Bay Food Bank said this will mark the 25th year for a lot of caring and sharing, thanks to Seaside Communications.

Ruth Martell, a volunteer at the Glace Bay Food Bank, adds pumpkins to the food orders. Martell said a member of the food bank and a volunteer were invited over to Quinn’s Farm in Millville where they were able to pick pumpkins, carrots and cucumbers, all donated by the farm, for the food orders.

Seaside Communications is holding their 25th annual ‘Caring and Sharing telethon for the Glace Bay Food Bank on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 4-9 p.m. in the lobby of the Savoy Theatre.

“This is a big thing for us, our major fundraiser,” said Sandra McPherson, co-ordinator of the food bank.

“Where it’s the 25th anniversary it was decided to hold it at the Savoy this year.”

McPherson said it all began 25 years ago when officials from Seaside Communications showed up at their door.

“They came with an idea for a telethon and they ran with it,” she said.

“Here we are in the 25th year.”

McPherson says this telethon raises funds they desperately need to help with Christmas orders for their clients but also throughout the year to purchase any needed food items not donated. However she said the event also has the food bank out in the public eye so the public can see what they do and how the food bank helps the community.

She said Seaside Communications staff work hard organizing the fundraiser including Jason LeFrense, program director, who takes the helm on the televising of the event and live stream, and so forth.

However she said Seaside Communications not only organizes the event, the company even gave them a $10,000 donation last year.

“This is a business that has supported our food bank over these 25 years, it’s amazing,” she said. “We can’t thank them enough.”

The event will be televised on Seaside Communications Channel 10 or you can call 902-567-1200.

Volunteers will be answering the phones.

McPherson said there will be live entertainment, giveaways and items auctioned off during the event.

She said among the generous donations they always see people who remember their mother coming to the food bank when they were growing up and want to give back. She said the public is incredibly generous every year.

“We could not do this if it wasn’t for the public,” she said.

“It’s a real testament to the community spirit we have here.”

Dave MacKeigan, chairperson of the board of the Glace Bay Food Bank, said the food bank is appreciative to Seaside Communications.

“It is a great fundraiser, the funds raised help the food bank all year.”

MacKeigan said there will be lots of entertainment during the telethon but they have room for a couple more entertainers. Anyone interested in getting involved can telephone him at 902-574-1856.
