Coun. Terry Bernard, chair of the public works committee, says the roundabout at Mount Edward Road and Allen Street is scheduled to open to traffic by June 22 or 23.
"The construction has been going very well,'' Bernard says. "The cement is being poured and traffic should be going through there next week.''
The $3-million project (half the money was spent on upgrading the storm sewer system) is slightly ahead of schedule.
"It's ahead of schedule by about a week. The intersection was closed down just so that (work crews) could move along a little bit quicker without too many interruptions.''
As of next week, all the paving will be done and traffic will be able to move through the intersection.
"We will still have landscaping (to do) and we still have the sidewalks to pour so the whole project will be completed by the first week of July.''
It will be Charlottetown's first roundabout and, with that in mind, the city is going to provide motorists with a roundabout clinic.
A mock roundabout will be set up in the Charlottetown Mall parking lot on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until at least 11 a.m. beside Empire Theatres.
"The timing on that is what we're looking for,'' Bernard says. "For anyone who feels they want to get the experience under a controlled environment they're welcome to come.''
Work on the city's next roundabout, at the Belvedere Avenue-UPEI intersection, is expected to begin as soon as traffic begins moving through the first roundabout.
Preliminary work has already begun on the Belvedere Avenue roundabout.
Unlike the project at Mount Edward-Allen, in which the intersection was actually shut down, the city will not be closing Belvedere Avenue (between Mount Edward and University) off to traffic.
"We've just been doing some perimeter work and putting in some catch basins. But there will always be two-way traffic (during construction of the roundabout).''
As for the major University Avenue expansion, Bernard says it's about 50 per cent complete.
"There have been minimal delays on University Avenue and hopefully that will continue.''

I agree with doing the work on the belvedere/UPEI roundabout at night. The traffic conjestion there is such that adding construction will just create nightmares. It has been bad enough this week and all they are doing is site preparation.
Doing all roadwork at nighjt is not possible because of the noise factor for adjacent residents. However, in areas like this, and Riverside Drive, where there are no adjacent residents, it is a great idea!!! -

...is a good idea based on the obvious fact that most Islanders do not know the difference between 'merge', and 'yield'. Maybe these roundabouts will eliminate all these frustrations plus put a stop to those others who do not know what a red light means either. Roundabouts work!

I bet there will be a FULL roundabout within the first 4 hours when traffic is backed up thru the light at the old jail! Then we will really see how good area drivers are! The same WILL happen at Ronnie's Follies when it's 'rush minutes' at the Grafton Street corner. I went thru this section before any work began,at 5:30, and traffic was back to the QEH. so where are these vehicles going to be stopped and waiting? I hope I'm not in an ambulance waiting for someone to make room to get thru.

The power was off today at Belvedere and Mt Edward. If drivers can't use an intersection as a four way when the power is off, how are they going to use a roundabout? I was clearly the first one at the intersection but there was a woman driver, who was last, thought she was first. Boy did I ever give her a dirty look!
How is she going to handle the roundabout?
The cops and the insurance companies should set up shop on the corner or setup intersection cameras . There will be alot of fender benders from the idiots that don't understand what Yield the right of way means . -

Townie where do you get your information from? I am presently working in Europe and am seeing trafic circles replacing intersections in a lot of areas. When I drive through them on a busy trafic day I always think......... man this is so easy an provides a continuos flow of trafic, why don't we have more of them in Canada .

This is great news......I stood in the center of this roundabout last Sunday........It will work great ....Lots of room...A big skirt for the back wheels of large trucks to ride up on.......I would like to see a large flower bed put in the center....I hope there will be left hand turning lanes into Tim Hortons.....I look forward to using it next week!!

In regards to doing construction at night: It's been proposed, but they either can't find enough workers or the wages are that much higher, that it raises the cost of the tender that much more that they axed the idea. It's usually a worker shortage issue, over a wage issue. It's cooler at night, less traffic, so summertime roadwork is not a problem for most. Larger cities will have full stretches of road done completely overnight, but PEI does not have the budget or the manpower for that. It simply costs more.
Looking forward to the roundabout, it's been a while since I've been in one.
How about a friendly request: Try to be nice to those who aren't totally skilled at them. Give people a little leeway and just be patient. It's no real feat to master the art of roundabouts, so try keeping the ego in check when you want to condescend granny as she slowly navigates her way through.
One thing Islander need to heed, though, if my request is flat out denied: Do NOT wave people into the roundabout ahead of you, like in general traffic or at a 4 way stop. That is NOT how it works, and messing with that will cause a total gridlock.

Finally joining the rest of the civilised world with these wonderful traffic tools.
Once properly educated on how to use them (perhaps a supplmental piece in the paper, several newspots on CBC for example...) drivers will be amazed at how pitifully they got around before.
And here's a thought - Why not do the majority of construction at the Belvedere-UPEI roundabout at night? Traffic will be at its most light, and there will be minimal distraction for the residents on that stretch. I'm sure that they'd appreciate be able to come and go from their houses during the day with no interruption if this were the case...
IN FACT, IN MY OPINION, ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN GENERAL SHOULD BE AT NIGHT, given the inability of our roads to handle roadworks induced congestion in the first place. (Oh, and the CAPS-LOCK was intentional)
Now, if only all the intersections on the 'bypass' were roundabouts, then we'd be seeing progress. -

Perhaps you can offer some more constructive comments. The roundabouts are being put in place to improve traffic flow. I'd be willing to bet you've sat at a red light and complained about the wait.
The mock-roundabouts are a great way to get people used to it. Some people are nervous about them and have never seen, let alone used a roundabout. If they want to give it some practice in a controlled environment for their own safety and the safety of others (including you), who are you to mock that? -

I agree with doing the work on the belvedere/UPEI roundabout at night. The traffic conjestion there is such that adding construction will just create nightmares. It has been bad enough this week and all they are doing is site preparation.
Doing all roadwork at nighjt is not possible because of the noise factor for adjacent residents. However, in areas like this, and Riverside Drive, where there are no adjacent residents, it is a great idea!!! -

I bet there will be a FULL roundabout within the first 4 hours when traffic is backed up thru the light at the old jail! Then we will really see how good area drivers are! The same WILL happen at Ronnie's Follies when it's 'rush minutes' at the Grafton Street corner. I went thru this section before any work began,at 5:30, and traffic was back to the QEH. so where are these vehicles going to be stopped and waiting? I hope I'm not in an ambulance waiting for someone to make room to get thru.

The power was off today at Belvedere and Mt Edward. If drivers can't use an intersection as a four way when the power is off, how are they going to use a roundabout? I was clearly the first one at the intersection but there was a woman driver, who was last, thought she was first. Boy did I ever give her a dirty look!
How is she going to handle the roundabout?
The cops and the insurance companies should set up shop on the corner or setup intersection cameras . There will be alot of fender benders from the idiots that don't understand what Yield the right of way means . -

Townie where do you get your information from? I am presently working in Europe and am seeing trafic circles replacing intersections in a lot of areas. When I drive through them on a busy trafic day I always think......... man this is so easy an provides a continuos flow of trafic, why don't we have more of them in Canada .

This is great news......I stood in the center of this roundabout last Sunday........It will work great ....Lots of room...A big skirt for the back wheels of large trucks to ride up on.......I would like to see a large flower bed put in the center....I hope there will be left hand turning lanes into Tim Hortons.....I look forward to using it next week!!

In regards to doing construction at night: It's been proposed, but they either can't find enough workers or the wages are that much higher, that it raises the cost of the tender that much more that they axed the idea. It's usually a worker shortage issue, over a wage issue. It's cooler at night, less traffic, so summertime roadwork is not a problem for most. Larger cities will have full stretches of road done completely overnight, but PEI does not have the budget or the manpower for that. It simply costs more.
Looking forward to the roundabout, it's been a while since I've been in one.
How about a friendly request: Try to be nice to those who aren't totally skilled at them. Give people a little leeway and just be patient. It's no real feat to master the art of roundabouts, so try keeping the ego in check when you want to condescend granny as she slowly navigates her way through.
One thing Islander need to heed, though, if my request is flat out denied: Do NOT wave people into the roundabout ahead of you, like in general traffic or at a 4 way stop. That is NOT how it works, and messing with that will cause a total gridlock.

Finally joining the rest of the civilised world with these wonderful traffic tools.
Once properly educated on how to use them (perhaps a supplmental piece in the paper, several newspots on CBC for example...) drivers will be amazed at how pitifully they got around before.
And here's a thought - Why not do the majority of construction at the Belvedere-UPEI roundabout at night? Traffic will be at its most light, and there will be minimal distraction for the residents on that stretch. I'm sure that they'd appreciate be able to come and go from their houses during the day with no interruption if this were the case...
IN FACT, IN MY OPINION, ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN GENERAL SHOULD BE AT NIGHT, given the inability of our roads to handle roadworks induced congestion in the first place. (Oh, and the CAPS-LOCK was intentional)
Now, if only all the intersections on the 'bypass' were roundabouts, then we'd be seeing progress. -

Perhaps you can offer some more constructive comments. The roundabouts are being put in place to improve traffic flow. I'd be willing to bet you've sat at a red light and complained about the wait.
The mock-roundabouts are a great way to get people used to it. Some people are nervous about them and have never seen, let alone used a roundabout. If they want to give it some practice in a controlled environment for their own safety and the safety of others (including you), who are you to mock that? -
