Cut Dave from PEI removed some slack here folks......he left this fair island and found FULL time employment in Alberta and is loving it. I think that is great! Teachers from away are quite puzzled by the way the education system is run here on PEI, and they should be. Some of the decisions and the way our system is run is questionable at best. I find it funny that some posters seem offended by Dave....people , he left and found a job elsewhere and did not spend years sub teaching in the hopes of getting something here on PEI. I think the problem is alot of you have not left the island and don't have an idea of what it is like . Believe it or not 9 years ago teachers in the Yukon were making at least 20K more then the teachers in N.B., I know this personally and the Yukon teachers couldn't believe that the N.B. teachers wages were so low. Glad that you are enjoying the West Dave...I miss it.

To: way to go Dave from NT. I think with an attitude such as yours you would be kind to all islanders if you kept your miserable A-- where you are at 50 if the islanders and there way of life is such an embarrassment to you and the people are Old Crows well I am not old and I have left the island numerous times and was always thankful to come back to this little piece of paradise on earth!!!!!!!

The teachers should be very happy to get what they did considering the fact that there are about FORTY teachers too many on the payroll as it now stands. The teachers are not in any position to complain as the contract that they have is very generous , compared to most in the private sector. I do hope that the government steps up to the plate and do the right thing and retire the teachers that are not needed now , so there will be some money in the future for our Island schools

Our students are getting an education by underpaid educators and that is a fact. The cost of living is not cheap in this province. Why do we compare the wages of educated professionals with non educated season workers? The benefits are also lacking. Most educators are women and women take time off to raise their children. This time off is deducted from their pensions and then they are penalized by not having full points at retirement age. Their pensions are not fully indexed to inflation. What other province has this type of system? Oh yes, those who have not had a full time job, will say how unfair it is for those who have to get a pension at all. Compare apples to apples please.

1, 2, and 3% WOW
Taking my B.Ed and leaving PEI was the smartest thing I ever did. I make $30k more here and cost of living is no different than PEI in rural Alberta.
I got 6% this year, get 3% in Sept and I am predicting 5% the year after. Our contract is tied to avg wages.
Look west, my future is so bright I gotta wear shades. -

Question to Way to go Dave from NT
Why would you want to retire in a place you consider to have pesticides and toxic water??? I will past on the beer as I do not drink with people that just talk to hear themselves as any decent person would not put their birth place down like you did they would say they could not make a go of it and moved away to do so but would like to return to retire and not call islanders Old Crows.Because islanders are good hard working loyal people as all of Canada knows and I was told this numerous times on my travels. -

Dave, the ones who defend PEI to death are the ones who never took a risk and left the island for any period of time. And I was on the right side of politics!!
I started out teaching on PEI and left soon after I saw how things were run. It's embarrasing, where no change ever takes place.
Your cost of living is exactly bang on. I am in the north and the only thing that is more expensive is housing costs. Electricity is only about $2-3 more a month.
There is nothing special about PEI. Same old same old. Here the possibilities are endless and the health benefits of living away from pesticides and toxic water are priceless.
I will be back when I have the money to retire at age 50. Hopefully those old nagging crows will be gone by then. -

Ok Islander
I don't believe that I said Islanders are lazy or unloyal? I did mentiion they are unwilling to change. As they are.
I am hoping in 22 years from now Islanders will realize that there are other forms of production (GMO) to produce potatoes and avoid the pesticides.
I resigned from my position. I had made a go of it. All on my own. My family is very very sucessful. I left as I felt there was a huge opportunity to be even more successful in another part of this country where there is a better education system, health care, and services.
Finally I can totally understand how you can defend where you are from. You have pride....great, so do I. But I am not naive and ignorant to the fact that PEI is sinking and the plague of the same old story dragging it down.
Come out of your shell and realize that it is not a good time to be living on PEI.....well at least once September is over. -

Last time I checked.
3% + 5% doesn't equal 6% infact either does 3% -5%, heck not even 3% x 5%.
You can't put a price on the quality of life that you get here in PEI.
Enjoy your extra 3 quarters(6% ??), and no PST, and province in the middle of no where. -

- - July 8th, 2010 at 16:25:46
Good thing you teach Math, there is a difference between got and get. Read it again.
And those extra quaters, (6%) account to a $4600 raise. What was yours?
Your quality of life isn't as great as you think. I admit, I used to think that way though. Actually, I am really glad I am raising my kids away from the rampant cynism of PEI.
When I first started teaching here, I was blown away at how positive the kids are compared to Island kids, and how positive they are about thier future. They think that way because the adults do too. My Dad always warned me about Island cynism, but I never saw it until after I left.
Quality of life here is far better. I think I will stay. -

- - July 8th, 2010 at 16:08:07
That is funny.
I showed a wage survey from 2006 to some friends who have never been east of the prairies, they were blown away.
They had no idea anyone in Canada worked for those kind of wages. I don't think I could put in words how amazed they were. Kids out of high school make better money in Alberta than an experienced journeyman on PEI.
Alberta is full of migrant workers from the Philipines, they are making better money than Islanders.
How come only Islanders measure quality of life without any economic terms, but everywhere else in the world-that is the number one factor to consider? -
