SUMMERSIDE - Amalgamated Dairies Limited is spending approximately $1 million to expand its distribution facility at Read’s Corner in Summerside.
Company CEO and general manager Jim Bradley, says the expansion will add about 7,500 square feet of space to the existing facility.
The current building has been getting cramped in recent years, said Bradley, and this new addition will allow staff some breathing room.
“It will provide room for growth in other portions of our business, whether be on the food service/retail side or the cheese business,” said Bradley.
The extra space will allow staff to create a staging area for outgoing orders, as well as allow them more space while transferring shipments between trucks.
Recent increases in the company’s cheese business will also be accommodated by the extra storage space.
Bradley said that ADL is funding the expansion with no public money going toward the project.
“The dairy producers of P.E.I. are the shareholders of the company and it’s a complete investment by the company,” he said.
ADL expects to start working out of the new space by the start of April.
The company does not expect to hire any new staff as a direct result of the expansion.
The current distribution facility was built in 2012 after the previous facility was gutted by fire in 2011.
