Prince Edward Island's producers and processors can continue to export food to national and international markets knowing they meet rigorous standards.

BioFoodTech, which provides accredited food safety analysis to P.E.I.'s seafood and agrifood processing industry, has earned re-accreditation by the Standards Council of Canada.

“The expertise and facilities at BioFoodTech were instrumental in supporting the launch and early stage growth of our Honibe branded products,” said John Rowe, chairman of the Food Island Partnership. “The availability of world-class product development support is essential in supporting the ongoing growth of our value-added food sector in Prince Edward Island.”

BioFoodTech is owned by the Province of Prince Edward Island and operates as a subsidiary company of Innovation P.E.I. It provides food safety analysis services required for export to national and international markets and support for new product and process development. BioFoodTech operates on contract to industry clients mostly in Prince Edward Island, but also obtains export revenue through contracts for clients regionally and nationally.

The accreditation process for BioFoodTech involves visits by the Standards Council of Canada technical experts every two years who examine the lab's technical competence.
