NEW GLASGOW — Glasgow Glen Farm has officially opened its cheese making facility in New Glasgow.

Combined government funding of $269,500 helped Glasgow Glen Farm open its new operation, which will allow the company to grow its product line and create new artisan cheeses that were not already available in the province, as well continue to make the famous “Cheese Lady’s Gouda”.

Federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea announced that Ottawa is providing funding of $85,000. Agriculture and Forestry Minister George Webster says the P.E.I. government provided an additional $34,500 and Finance P.E.I. provided a term loan of $150,000 to support this expansion.

Glasgow Glen Farm is the only artisanal cheese maker in Prince Edward Island and will offer different varieties of cheese, including the Cheese Lady’s Gouda as well as feta, and blue cheeses in the future.

“This new equipment will contribute to making some of the most unique cheeses this Island has to offer,” said Shea. “Our Government recognizes that diversifying local offerings will expand the tourism and agri-food sectors and strengthen our economy.”

Webster says it’s important, as a government, to continue to support innovation and expansion in the agriculture sector and help local producers reach new markets.

Jeff McCourt is the owner of Glasgow Glen Farm.

“We are pleased to be continuing the great tradition Cheeselady's Gouda Cheese, an iconic P.E.I. food product. Glasgow Glen Farm is proud to be part of the amazing culinary fabric of Prince Edward Island and showcase some of the best quality milk in the country."

Great job Jeff … this new operation deserves support from both Islands and our tourist traffic.

Great story. Glad to see local business being given a helping hand to produce great quality local products while at the same time employing islanders. All the best Jeff and family!

It never stops to amaze me where today's government seems to find the money for all these announcements every weekend when in the same breath they say cut backs are necessary in education & health care ?????????????????????? got to find where that hidden money tree is located .

You really don't understand anything about finance do you? Like it or not...there are other areas other than education and health that needs to keep on going. But then again...when you want to troll about the government. of the day..any topic is an opportunity to vent your armchair criticism. And FYI - I don't have to be of any political stripe to comment OR disagree with you.
