Work on MacKenzie Drive in Summerside
SUMMERSIDE — Area residents are going to see some major changes over the next four months as work gets underway on the Prince Alex Resort and Convention Centre.
The site of the former Dynasty Spa has been quiet over the summer as new designs were drafted and a new wing added to the proposed five-star hotel.
“We just came from a meeting down there (at the site),” Nicolle Morrison, co-broker/owner of Century 21 Northumberland Realty. “They’re just waiting for the final approvals on the new foundation. That are out front to start work as soon as that gets signed on the dotted line they’ll be going down there. We’ve been changing things and they need to price it and tender it.”
The new design was drafted for the rooftop of the round two-storey 7,000 square-foot building consisting of a restaurant, gift shop area and tour area and a new wing that will increase the number of rooms from 96 rooms 116 rooms.
Morrison said it looks like September before the crews will be back on site.
“Hopefully, Sept. 1 they’ll be in there or shortly thereafter,” she said. “We need to have it tight and done by December.”
Morrison said with the shell complete before winter weather hits, crews can continue to work on the interior.
“We still have the inside design to get approved and done but they want it weather-tight for winter so they can get the work done on the inside,” she said.
Plans had called for work to be done on the new wing first but those plans have changed and Morrison thinks it’s for the better.
“The wing is taking a little longer so they said they would start the front part first while we’re waiting to get the wing designed,” she said. “We can’t wait to get the front part done. It will be beautiful. It’s better to get the front done because the wing is in the back and nobody would see it. It will be great to get the front done so that people can see how amazing it is.”
Sean Liu, a Chinese businessman living in Toronto, purchased the 50 acres of land located at 298 MacKenzie Dr. in Summerside — future site of the Prince Alex Resort and Convention Centre — in 2005, and has been working to develop the area.
Liu has now increased the size of the property to 116 acres.
The new hotel is due to open in the summer of 2016.
