Tracy Elwood, with Feasible Fuels, gets ready to make an oil delivery in Charlottetown recently.

SUMMERSIDE – Feasible Fuels is opening an office in downtown Summerside.

The Charlottetown-based company has provided low volume oil deliveries to Central and Eastern P.E.I. for the past two years.

Company founder Jeff Mellish expects to cover all of Prince County by September with this latest expansion.

“It’s just the next logical move is to go out towards Summerside. It’s the next biggest urban area … and I mean it’s the Island – everyone is in need,” said Mellish.

He added that the company started making deliveries to the Summerside area in mid-January, though they haven’t really been advertising that fact; as they didn’t really have the infrastructure here to support more than a few delivers.

But with the opening of their new Summerside office they intend to have one truck stationed here to service the whole county.

Until September their cut off delivery area is Miscouche.

Feasible Fuels has made its business by catering to Islanders who want to place small furnace oil orders.

Larger companies will only deliver half or sometimes quarter tanks of oil, which can cost several hundred of dollars.

Realizing that many Island families were having trouble scratching together the funds to make those lump purchases, Mellish started a delivery service that take orders for as low as 100 litres of oil.

It’s a business model that’s worked well, there have been times it was hard to keep up with demand, said Mellish.

“It’s just the nature of the way we are on the Island, with have seasonal work … the extra funds just aren’t there. A lot of times it’s a decision, for a lot of people between food and heat – and heat doesn’t usually win that battle. So we kind of bridge that gap,” he said.

Mellish said they’re working hard to get their office opened here as soon as possible so people up this way can have an opportunity to start filling their tanks for winter.

The price difference between furnace oil in the summer and early fall can be significantly lower than in winter, said Mellish, so he’s trying to encourage people to buy now.

The company has already hired two drivers to help cover Prince County and hope to hire at least one more person to man their office here.

good for Feasible Fuels, providing a much needed service in hard times for people who would have to go without, or line up at a service station with jerry cans.
