Sean Liu, a Chinese businessman living in Toronto, purchased the 50 acres of land located at 298 MacKenzie Drive in Summerside — future site of the Prince Alex Resort and Convention Centre — in 2005 and has been working to develop the area.
Liu has now increased the size of the property to 116 acres and added a new wing to the design.
Nicolle Morrison, co-broker/owner of Century 21 Northumberland Realty, was among a group of stakeholders who recently returned from a trip to China to meet with Liu and work on enhancing the plans for the resort.
“We went on an 18-day tour in China, the design team and got to see through his eyes what he would like to see in his resort,” Morrison said. “We went to 14 cities and stayed in nine different hotels so that we could experience all of the different hotels.”
Morrison said a new design is being drafted for the rooftop of the round two-storey 7,000-square-foot building consisting of a restaurant, gift shop area and tour area.
Initially, the new resort was to have 96 rooms but with the new wing being proposed, that number will increase to 116 rooms, Morrison said.
She said the outside shell for the entire development will be completed by wintertime, this year.
“The new wing was supposed to be on delay until it opened, but Liu decided he would do it now and do it all,” Morrison said. “The interior, because it’s so much more complicated, there are some people coming from away who are going to help him with the layout.
“If he went full tilt it would be completed in December of 2015. He doesn’t want to open then. It will be June of 2016. So, we have an extra six months or seven months that we can slow down and not be really pushed to open.”
The centre building will consist of a convention centre on the first floor and the second will be the spa area.
“There are 16 suites included in the 116 rooms,” she said. “It will be a five-star hotel.”
Morrison said the restaurant and spa will be open to the public and not reserved just for guests so anyone can take advantage of the facilities.
