Innovation job fair attracts Island job seekers

Hundreds of people crowded into the Atlantic Technology Centre in Charlottetown to visit the eighth annual innovation technology job fair.

Innovation and Technology Association of P.E.I. organized the recent event to showcase 15 IT companies and recruit job seekers for vacant IT positions.

Speaking during the event, ITAP innovation director Mike Gillis said he expected about 250 people to visit the job fair.

“It’s definitely the biggest event of the year.”

All of the companies were advertising their open positions, said Gillis.

“When someone comes to this fair, they know there are jobs. That is fundamental to IT.”

Buchanan Technologies, TUC Managed IT Solutions and Invesco are new additions to the fair this year.

Justin Robinson, the team leader for Invesco’s service desk, said the company joined ITAP several months ago.

Invesco is a global money management and investment organization, but its IT branch is growing on P.E.I., said Robinson.

“We see Charlottetown as a great place to build IT roles and develop Invesco culture.”

DeltaWare Systems was another exhibitor at the fair. DeltaWare is a Canadian-based IT firm specializing in eHealth and eBusiness solutions.

Susan Frizzell, DeltaWare’s human resources administrator, said this is the company’s seventh time as an exhibitor at the job fair.

“We’ve had good experiences in the past. It’s really well organized.”

Deltaware is looking for two programmer analysts. The company is searching for someone with a specific skill set, said Frizzell.

“We’re looking for people who have a bachelor degree in computer science or a diploma from a college, as well as a background in IT. We want keen people who are able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at one time.”

James Martin, a fourth-year computer science student from UPEI, heard of the job fair a few years ago from the university and has visited the fair before.

“I’m hoping to get in at a gaming company but I have worked in software before,” said Martin.

Martin has worked at Deltaware and Sculpin QA, a mobile application and video game developing company.

Martin said his knowledge and programming experience from UPEI would help him land a job at another IT company.

Gillis said the job fair has collected positive feedback in previous years and he hopes this year’s fair will do the same.

“We have positive reviews from job seekers and employers.”

He said the fair encourages Island IT job seekers to get jobs at P.E.I.-based companies.

“The best way to get people to stay is to help them get employment. If they don’t have opportunities, they will go elsewhere.”

    I went to the job fair, and I found it fairly limited for my skill set. A lot of companies were looking for programmers and developers where my interest is in network administration. Most of the employers are also looking for someone with at least 3 years of experience, which brings up the old issue of requiring job experience to get a job to acquire job experience. This can be an obstacle for someone who is finishing a 2 year networking program. Most IT jobs also require certifications, some of which can't be obtained without job experience. The exams can also be very expensive to purchase. However, I did get a promising interview out of it so it was certainly beneficial.
