The City of Charlottetown, in partnership with Trius Transit, is anticipating another successful year for the transit system.

Charlottetown transit experienced growth throughout 2012 with ridership up eight per cent over 2011.

In February 2013, the Monday-to-Friday daily average was 1,291 people, which represented a 19.6 per cent increase over February 2012.

“Charlottetown transit is an affordable and environmentally friendly transportation option that we encourage citizens to take advantage of," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "The city worked hard with Trius Transit to provide many improvements in 2012, including a more aggressive marketing plan, and it’s great to see those efforts producing such positive results.”

The city entered into a transit agreement with Trius Transit, the Town of Stratford and the Town of Cornwall in 2012 to provide regional transit services to the three municipalities.

Transit was also re-branded last year with the new T3 logo and tagline, “Take Transit Today”, which represents the three-way partnership. New signage was created, uniforms were provided to drivers and the buses were painted bright green with yellow trim.

Transit schedules have also undergone many revisions to increase frequency and availability, and passengers have reported it to be a more reliable service.

As a result of the changes, two statistical records were broken in 2012: the number of passengers using transit per day; and the number of riders per month.

“We have no reason to think those numbers won’t continue to grow as we keep making improvements to the transit and we’re able to access more routes and appeal to more passengers,” said Coun. Terry Bernard, chair of the city’s public works, street lighting and transit committee.

I take the bus everyday... I love it! The only thing is I live on MacRae Dr. in East Royalty and in order for me to catch the bus I have to walk up to Hillsborough.. not that I mind the walk but there is only a sidewalk on the opposite side of the road which means that I have to cross that BUSY St. Peters Highway every morning and every afternoon. Not including when I want to catch the bus with my children... I just wish that the bus would come out more than twice.. which is at 7 am and at 5 pm

I would like to see better bus service runs to QEH ESP with the opening of ambulatory care and staff hours , visiting hours , the last bus in the evening is 5 pm visiting hours end at 8:30 and only bus runs to hospital Monday to Friday ? It is too bad that bus routes don't start in their run locations instead of downtown to bring commuters that need early runs like north collector and Cornwall should begin in those areas 7 am instead of down town in which most thinks down town not open until 8.30 . Offer special packages to staff and frequent users who use such services at hospital like they do for students . The hospital runs are adequate in other provinces . A lot of people are under drivers lisence restrictions due to medical problems so they don't use a car and do not use the pay per hour parking lot . There are also medical students new grands also do not have a car . I know as a staff it is a waste to take the car once your their for your 12 hour shift your car sits there many times I would use the bus and not take the car . First bus from north collector and wall bus arrives in am at 7.40 am staff hece to be to work at least. 7 20 am to 730 pm seven days a week and eight hour shifts are from 730 330 nights and evenings 730 to 1130 pm and 730 pm -730 am ? Patients also need their visitors. To have the bus not run after five pm and no weekend s not good service to QEH. For any one

Yes, great that public tranit is sustainable on PEI. Students getting a pass is a big incentive and help for them as well! Question though; does Trius have permits for all that off site signage they use in the City's bus shelters? Is the city paying Trius to manage the advertising wing of it's own company? How much does Trius make off of the off site signage and when did it receive permits?

I for one am thrilled to see ridership up. This means continued service and even more frequent schedules. For those of you concerned about the cost of parking downtown have you ever considered parking at the Charlottetown Mall and then taking the bus downtown? For less than $5 you can park all day without worry of a parking ticket or finding a place to park. Buses run every 15 minutes up and down University Ave.

I'm happy to hear that ridership is steadily increasing -- it should continue to grow each year as younger generations get used to using the system.

Great news. I commend the owners of Trius for persisting with this and bringing PEI into the modern age. In a province where most people refuse to get out of their cars, this success is impressive. Now could we please have a Ch'town bus that travels east/west?
