Flaherty says new Bank of Canada governor must be able to function in both languages

DAVOS, Switzerland — Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says the government would prefer that the next governor of the Bank of Canada be fluently bilingual.

But at the very least, Flaherty says the candidate must be able to function in both French and English, while noting that outgoing governor Mark Carney spoke both languages.

The finance minister, in Davos at the annual economic summit, says he would like to interview four or five candidates and to have a new head of the central bank by June 1.

Flaherty says he’s looking forward to see who comes forward as candidates and encouraged women and minorities to apply.

Carney recently announced he was leaving to take over the top post at the Bank of England.

Most observers believe his current job will go to Tiff Macklem, the Bank of Canada’s second in command.
