The Canadian economy created 40,000 jobs in December — all of it in full-time work — and drove the unemployment rate to its lowest in four years, Statistics Canada said Friday.

Ontario accounted for about three-quarters of the Canadian jobs added in December and almost all of the other provinces either saw gains or stayed even. The only exception was Nova Scotia, which lost 5,000 jobs.

The federal agency’s national unemployment rate slipped by one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.1 per cent.

The results easily topped economist estimates for a gain of just 5,000 jobs nationally and an unemployment rate of 7.3 per cent.

Prince Edward Island’s unemployment rate also took a small drop in December.

The rate stood at 11.0 per cent in December. That’s down from 11.4 the previous month as the Island economy added 1,300 new jobs.

The better than expected results follows what was a strong November, when Canada’s economy created 59,300 jobs.

December saw 41,200 new full-time jobs added, while the number of part-time positions fell by 1,400.

Compared with a year earlier, Statistics Canada said there were 312,000 more jobs, all in full-time work.

The new jobs were added in a month of much handwringing over the so-called fiscal cliff in the United States and worries that if a budget deal was not reached Canada’s largest trading partner could be tipped back into recession.

A last-minute deal this week has prevented taxes from rising on the middle class and the poor. However U.S. lawmakers still must wrangle over spending cuts and raising the country’s debt ceiling.

Ontario led the way with a gain of 33,000 jobs in December, following a similar increase in November. Most of the other provinces posted gains or were little changed for the month.

Manitoba posted an increase of 5,200, Saskatchewan added 4,000 and Newfoundland and Labrador increased by 2,700.

Prince Edward Island added 1,300 jobs, while New Brunswick, Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia were little changed for the month.

The gains were made in the transportation and warehousing segment which added 22,000 jobs, while the construction industry gained 18,000 jobs.

Professional, scientific and technical services lost 42,000, while public administration dropped 13,000.

Meanwhile, the industrial product price index was down 0.3 per cent in November compared with October, mainly as a result of lower petroleum and coal prices.

The raw materials index fell 1.9 per cent on lower oil prices.

If PEI added 1300 new jobs in Dec PROVE IT. There has neever been more the a hundred job openings on this Island at one time. you are excellent at quoting number but where are the facts??? What you probably meant was 1300 Islanders are working out West. Sorry Ghizzy you can't count those as Island Jobs

Unfortunately the majority of Islanders will do exactly opposite to what is right. If you don't want them to park in a certain area tell them to park there and they won't. The same with elections, They know which way is the right way but will vote the other way because no one is going to tell them what to do.

Staples is right! Great job by the Harper government. And if the EI changes meant some folks went where the work was instead of drawing pogey, snowmobiling, playing oldtimers hockey and drinking all day, then that's a good thing. It's called breaking the cycle of entitlement.

The rate may have lowered but only because of the people that were cut off of their ei claim for the new rules being put into place before telling the people what they all were. There will be many more cut off before its all over and they will brag about more jobs being created which we all know better.

we know its crap...cause if...and I mean IF(I know better), these jobs were indeed created...that self-centred, selfish, spoiled, egotistical, arrogant, evil thing we call our provincial government would have been only too happy to brag about THEIR accomplishments. there are no limits to how stupid they think we are...

There is no way in heck that PEI added 1300 jobs in december. I would love to see the formula used to calculate that. There are less than 250 jobs on the job bank on pei for the last 60 days. Where are these jobs coming from you crooks

Who would believe anything Stats Canada says, they are the ones who give us the Consumer Price Index instead of the real cost of living so that the Fed , Prov and Municipal Gov don't have to give people the real cost of living increases. They lie about everything they do

Have to agree with you Garth. I think we are very fortunate to have such a competent leader as Mr. Harper. It is too bad the majority of out of touch, misguided Islanders that voted in the last federal election wasted their votes on the 3rd place |Liberals.

I know there are some good men out there though too...I am not a total man hater...not yet anyways...this government is not helping matters.
