Four-storey hotel on the rise on Montague waterfront

Robert Jay relaxes with the Montague River in the background. Work is underway on Jay’s The Riverhouse Inn. It will feature 30 rooms over four stories.

MONTAGUE — The ground has been broken here for a new hotel in eastern P.E.I.’s largest town.

“I think it will be a great addition to the town and we certainly need it,’’ said Robert Jay, a long-time tourism operator who runs Lanes Cottages with his wife.

The town of Montague officially approved the application for the new $2.3 million project on Dec. 10 and welcomed the commercial venture addition to the community. It will be constructed at the Lanes Cottages site next to the federal Addiction Research Centre and overlooking the Confederation Trail and Montague River.

The new 30-room, four-storey building will be called the Riverhouse Inn and include a 100-seat multi-media room featuring convention-like facilities. It will also feature turrets and plenty of huge windows to take advantage of the southern exposure and natural lighting. All rooms will overlook the Montague River and marina.

Jay said the new hotel will operate year round and rely on strong area tourism during the seasonal months and sporting tournaments and business sessions during the off season.

Participants in large winter tournaments hosted at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre arena and curling club have to seek the bulk of lodging requirements in Charlottetown. The new hotel is expected to rectify that lack of accommodation space.

“Even though there will not be a restaurant, there will be a sun room breakfast area for our guests on the property and the banquet/conference space has a full kitchen to meet any caterers dream,” said Jay. “There are good restaurants in the area other than fast food and I do not want to take anything away from them, especially if they stay open all year.”

The developer spent two years assembling the project with design teams and private investors. It’s expected to open in June.

This is great, not only for Mr. Jay, but the entire town. The "Holman" Hotel, as one person compared this to, was a flop right from the beginning, nothing more than a way to funnel funds directly into the pockets of a certain and our "diligent" government (sarcasm) couldn't see this. Every other islander that looks at this can clearly see that sticking taxpayers with the bill was the original plan. This new construction in Montague is privately funded, and unless I missed something, not government garanteed.

I see Montague is all gung-ho for this new development. That's probably why the Feds are closng the EI office in town. What are you two negative nellies doing about the lack of jobs in town?

Hope things go better for the creditors then they did with the Holman Hotel in Charlottetown. We don't need another hotel added to our taxes, anyway I am NOT suggesting that there will be a problem.
