Zellers at the Charlottetown Mall will be closing for good following business hours on Thursday, March 14, 2013.

A spokesman with Hudson’s Bay Company said no decisions, meanwhile, have been made in terms of the Zellers location in Summerside.

The Charlottetown location is one of only five Zellers stores in the Maritimes that will be converted into a Target store.

The Summerside location was not acquired by Target.

“We’re still reviewing our options for the non-acquired location,’’ said Tiffany Bourre, public relations with Zellers. “It’s business as usual until we have a go-forward strategy.’’

Zellers plans on holding a liquidation sale for the last three months of its operation at the Charlottetown Mall, meaning the prices will be slashed before Christmas.

There are approximately 100 employees at the Zellers location in Charlottetown.

Target hasn’t announced when it plans to open in the Charlottetown Mall but management with the mall told The Guardian Wednesday that it will take “several months’’ to revamp the 108,000 square feet of space.

It will cost more than $10 million to renovate the location at the Charlottetown Mall.

According to the mall management, Target is aiming for a fall 2013 opening.

I never understood how Zellers stayed open as long as it has. The merchandize are war over prices compared to Wal Mart. For example the Transformers: Prime line of toys are $25 at Zellers and $15 at Wal Mart. The electronics department. That's a mess. Still selling 4-5 year old videogames at new release prices. I used to work in the Electronics department in the Charlottetown Zellers and a mother almost paid of a game that was 3 times less at EB games. I told her I could not in good conscience let you buy this. Go to EB games. Its 3 times less there. She thanked me and headed for EB games. I personally can't wait for Target open. It will finally give someone for Wal Mart to to be concerned with.

Oh, I agree. However, out of the 2 stores, Ssides>Ctowns Electronics. Back a few years ago Zellers Electronics use to be competitive with everywhere else. Then they threw that out the window. They decided that, even if they move less merchandise, so long as it's not discounted below cost, they'll make more. Ya...

Actually, the Summerside Zellers is closing too. According to associates, they received their paperwork for a March 14th closing date as well. So there goes both Zellers from PEI, with one not turning in to anything.

There will be no more Zellers anywhere. It is going out of business everywhere. Target stores will be opening. Much nicer merchandise, great service and very reasonable prices for quality. .

You do realize I know there are no more Zellers anywhere. I was making a comment as Summerside is losing another shopping icon. If only the parent company had given a crap, it might still be in business. I feel sorry for the associates.

Old photo of Zellers sign??? I notice it says "Truly Canadian" which is not at all true since a US company bought out HBC. In fact, it's become increasingly difficult to shop Canadian at all.

Some of the stores used to say "the lowest price is the law" as well, which as a former employee I can attest THAT was no longer true either. I always found that the customers who always complained about stores not being "canadian" would complain about having to go to the ones that still were. I heard daily how much better Walmart was, so really why are we surprised?

Surprise surprise, HBC is owned by an American firm, why in hell would they be concerned about 100 PEI Workers losing their jobs. I know that in Kingston, ON,Target will only hire on Zellers workers if they are willing to start at the bottom.Shame Shame Shame NRDC, which is based in Purchase, N.Y., also owns Fortunoff, a U.S. jewelry and home furnishings chain of stores, and clothing design firm Creative Design Studios. "By acquiring Hudson's Bay Co. along with previous acquisitions Lord & Taylor and Fortunoff, we will have an unprecedented opportunity to recreate the retail landscape in North America,” said Baker. Hudson's Bay Co. owns the Bay, Zellers Home Outfitters and the Fields chains of retail outlets.
