Summerside's Dairy Queen restaurant closed its doors recently.

SUMMERSIDE – Dairy Queen has abdicated its place among the royalty of ice-cream destinations in the city.

Franchise owner Craig Bowman confirmed the closure as of April 15, citing mainly family reasons along with business realities.

“We had a five-year-plan, coming in, and it’s been seven years,” he said. “We’ve decided that we have other interests now, and it is time to move on.”

Bowman and his wife are anticipating becoming grandparents this year, and they do want to take time to enjoy family life.

Prior to becoming the franchise owner, he was a warehouse manager in Ontario, and his wife was a Laboratory Technician at a hospital.

Bowman admits that there were business considerations as well, but they were internal rather than competition.

“We did struggle with help over the years,” he admitted. “I don’t know if that’s just us; I think one of the reasons is maybe because we didn’t offer a benefit package.”

If that was the basis of the staffing difficulty, it was certainly something Bowman could understand, especially for those with a family and trying to manage on minimum wage.

“We struggled, probably the last three or four years, with help, but you can’t fault people for wanting to better themselves.”
