Card collectors might want to make some room in their boxes this weekend.
Backmandy Collectibles on Belvedere Avenue in Charlottetown is holding National Hockey Card Day for the fourth year in a row today.
The collectible card store will have 100 packs of hockey cards available for free starting at 11 a.m.
The event, sponsored by card company Upper Deck, will share the day with CBC's Hockey Day in Canada.
Backmandy owner Greg Willoughby said the Girls and Boys Club in Summerside would be getting extra free cards at their ball hockey tournament on the same day.
Each pack contains five cards featuring Canadian players. There are 15 in the set. Anyone who makes
a purchase at the store
will also receive a special card.
Collecting cards gives children something to do besides watching TV, playing video games and using the Internet, Willoughby said.
"It allows them the opportunity to learn how to take care of things," Willoughby said.
For the last three years Canadians have enjoyed a special treat to go along with Hockey Day in Canada where they can head to select hobby shops and score free packs of Upper Deck NHL cards. Packs are delivered exclusively through Upper Deck's network of Certified Diamond Dealers who operate brick and mortar hobby shops throughout Canada.
Most of these retailers will be running a variety of other events and specials to make the most of this special day.
