I surf and read a lot of photographic web sites and I usually find a lot of interesting stuff. Some of it I can put to use in my day to day shooting or maybe learn more about my camera or digital photography in general and then there are things that send chills up my spine such as this story I found on the PopPhoto web site. www.popphoto.com/popularphotographyfeatures/2668/the-war-on-photographers.html I realize this story is more about the United States after Sept. 11, 2001 and the laws are different here, but it could also start happening in Canada when paranoia overtakes commonsense so it would be wise for photographers - both professional and amateur - to know something about the law as it relates to making photographs.

On reading the story, there are a lot of facts missing. I admit I stand beside the police in defence of not just National Security but public security. I understand he was there at that hour to catch the perfect light but I can also see it was most probably handled by the Police playing their Protector role. We don't know what kind of attitude that the photographer gave the security and if he gave them a proper explanation of what he was doing. Some people are arrogant and like to push the police to show that they have rights. as he quickly pointed out his rights to the First, Fourth and Fourteenth Ammendmends. Again when it comes to the protection of your families lives I believe we have to support those that are trying to protect us.
