To quote the words of Gen.Lewis McKenzie (Ret) :The Canadian Military is stretched like a Bungee cord
For once I agree with Gen Mac. Despite the upcoming surge of the Spring Offensive in Afghanistan our troops carry on in the professionalism of their duties on this dangerous mission.
In Haiti, looting, and mobs of machete wielding gangs are putting a severe strain on the life saving humanitarian efforts of the world. The Vandoos who are very active in Haiti are due to travel to Ft Irwin in the US for a refresher in combat training for their next rotation to Afghanistan in December.
Our Danish counterparts fighting the somali pirates were able to recapture a hi jacked vessel. Canada is a significant part of Piracy Patrol.
Then we have the Olympic committment. Land Sea and Air operations for security, medical evacuation and terror threats. This important job is going to be tested by the brainless protesters who have vowed to block the access roads for the opening ceremonies. Do these foolish people not understand that their right to protest is guaranteed by people like the Canadian Military RCMP and local police forces.
So despite the many varied aspects of these current missions Canadian Troops carry on with professionalism and courage.
I received the Obituary notice today for our Apprentice Brother who has moved on to the advance party. Terry Firman a Soldier, Canadian and proud family man.
FIRMAN, Terrence (Terry), Edward Stephen
1947 - 2010
Peacefully on Wednesday February 3, 2010, at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital after a brief illness. Beloved husband of Mary, proud and loving father of Nicholas (Kari) and Tanya (Jason). Dear brother of Ken and brother-in-law of Margaret Clare.
Terry had a long and rewarding career serving in Canada and overseas during his 30 years with the Canadian Armed Forces. This experience led to continued employment in various departments of the Federal Government. He endeared himself to his co-workers and friends with his gregarious personality, always willing to lend a helping hand. Terry grew up in Arborg, Manitoba then began his military life as a Boy Soldier. For the past four years he was honoured to serve as President of the RCASC Soldier Apprentice Association. He will be sadly missed by those with whom he served, his many friends, colleagues and extended family.
Sincere thanks to the wonderful staff of the Neurosciences Department the Palliative Care team of the Ottawa Hospital. The compassion, care and comfort given to Terry and to the family in the past few weeks was exceptional and we are truly grateful.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 13th, 2010, at 2pm at the Church of St. Columba, 24 Sandridge Road, Ottawa, ON K1K 0A8 (613) 749-5103.
Terry always had a Smile
With the the ongoing missions and with the sad death of Terry, as Canadians we know that life must go on. Here are some excerpts from Charlene at Military Family Services.
