BREAKING NEWS: Sunday March 08

Canadian soldier dead; four wounded in roadside bomb attack The Canadian Press

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan One Canadian soldier has been killed and four others wounded in a roadside bomb attack north of Kandahar.

The attack that killed Trooper Marc Diab, 22, happened in the southern Shah Wali Kot district, a mountainous region and known transit point for Taliban fighters entering the province.

His armoured vehicle was on patrol when it struck a large explosive around 1:15 p.m. Kandahar time.

Diab, a member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, is the 112th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan since 2002.

All four wounded soldiers are reported in stable condition and each of them will be evacuated to a U.S. army hospital in Germany for further care. Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance, the commander of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, paid tribute to Diab, saying the young soldier died in pursuit of a noble goal the desire to transform an unstable and impoverished country into a secure and self-sufficient nation.

I was absolutely shocked today when the BBC lead story was the death of 2 young soldiers in N.Ireland. The peace process is again threatened by these mindless acts of violence. The last killing of a soldier was in 1997 when he was killed by a sniper's bullet.

My prayers to the families in their time of grief and loss. May the wounded have a speedy recovery from their wounds.

The murder of soldiers at an Antrim army base leaves Northern Ireland's politicians and security chiefs with a major challenge.

The attack is part of an attempt by dissident republicans to wreck the peace process and bring down the power-sharing Stormont Assembly. Northern Ireland's authorities will be trying to find a way to ensure they do not succeed.

Extremely dangerous

In February 2009, a 250lb (114kg) bomb was defused close to an Army base in South Down. It was clear republican dissidents were stepping up their campaign.

Previously, their attacks had been erratic and sporadic, and aimed more at the police than the Army. Unionists will be asking Sinn Fein why they criticised the police warnings about dissident republicans

It is worth pointing out that although the dissident factions are armed and extremely dangerous, they do not have the weaponry or the numbers of people to mount a sustained campaign like the IRA did during the Troubles. What is more, they have minimal public support.

They do not have a political wing which contests elections. They believe in the armalite not the ballot box.

The two soldiers were due to be posted to Afghanistan in a few days? To protect the rights of the murdering Vandals in Ireland?
