My apologies to the Town of Cornwall Cenotaph committee; deserter allowed to stay

My sincere apologies to the Cornwall PEI cenotaph committee, for missing the ceremony on Sept 21 Sunday. I went to the Cenotaph at approximately 1010 fully dressed blazer, flannels , blue beret and medals. Unfortunately I waited till 1130 with no one else arriving. I thought then that this was a joke on me. The next morning at 0445 I passed the cenotaph enroute to work , there were wreaths layed reverently at the base of the cenotaph memorials. The ceremony had indeed been held at 1400 on the Sunday. This tradition of Corwall conducting services in September comes from a decision made many many years ago. When Cornwall was a farming community one November 11th. the mud on the unpaved roads prevented people from travelling in to the services. It was decided then that the service of remembrance would be held in September at 1400 in order that farm families could complete their chores before going to the cenotaph. Ninety years since the end of WW! and these few proud Canadians carry out the tradition of remembrance.Well Done

This proud tradition goes against the apathy of most Islanders for our current operation in Afghanistan. Most Islanders do not wear Red on Friday to show support nor do they attend Red Rally days. The next Red Rally day is Nov 07 and I would like to see 300 people attend that care for our troops. As the election campaign rolls on I was shocked and embarrassed to hear of an incident at the Stephen Harper Rally in Summerside, a party supporter was registering and he was wearing a support our troops Golf shirt. The person registering him said he should not be wearing red at a conservative rally. This was not only insensitive but rude, the wearing of red on a friday is all part of Canadians showing support regardless of party.

U.S. army deserter, family win stay of deportation

A U.S. army deserter and his family were granted a last-minute stay of deportation Monday by a Federal Court judge while the court decides whether to hear their appeal.

Jeremy Hinzman, his wife and two children were ordered to leave Canada by Tuesday or face forcible deportation to the United States, where the soldier faces prosecution for fleeing to Canada in 2004 rather than deploying with his army unit to Iraq.

Hinzman's claim for refugee status was rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board in 2005. An appeal to the Federal Court of Appeal also failed, with the court ruling that he wouldn't face any serious punishment if he returned to the U.S.

The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear his case.

Yet the Liberals have said:

Liberal Bob Rae spoke at a Toronto news conference Thursday with Hinzman.

Rae said the Liberals are still committed to keeping American war deserters in Canada.

I personally have not changed my opinion in this matter. Send them home immediately, The US is our military ally and desserters should be dealt with by their own military\.

If this desserter is worried about his family perhaps he should not have taken the oath to serve his country, please do not use them as pawns in a Canadian court. GO home and stand up like a man and accept your punishment if any for your desertion.

This U.S Army deserter should not be permitted to remain in Canada, what is wrong with this country of ours. Our Government does not have the courage to tell these people that they are not welcome here. Come on Canada show some backbone, and do what is right.Send them back to the U.S.and face their punishment.
