Happy 108th Birthday to Canada's Sole surviving Veteran of the Great War WW1 Jack Babcock.

You know, I am going to kick the bucket one of these days, Canada's final remaining World War I veteran joked about his incredible longevity yesterday.

The legend of John Foster Babcock has been growing for 108 years with no signs of coming to an end anytime soon.

You know, I am going to kick the bucket one of these days, Canada's final remaining World War I veteran joked about his incredible longevity yesterday.

It was nice, he said of becoming a Canadian again to go along with his American citizenship he took when he went south in the 1920s.

But no matter where he has been in his life, he said, he always was Canadian.

I was born on a 350-acre farm near Kingston and if I close my eyes, I can envision the fields.

In and around that farm near Holleford, residents are awfully proud that the legend hails from these parts.

In Sydenham, where he enlisted as a 15-year-old, at 10 a.m. folks from the area and from Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 496, will also blow out 108 candles on a cake at the Hillside Coffee Shop, which has a popular Jack's Joe coffee on their menu and a picture of him on their wall.

This whole area is very proud that Jack comes from here, said Hillside owner Gary Dickenson who with wife Gayle said, We don't ever want to forget him.

Babcock is a living, breathing piece of Canadian history. He says it seems like only yesterday he left his family farm and joined his brother, Manley, to fight for his country. The problem was that when he got to England, they discovered his age and put him in what was dubbed the Boys' Brigade and became a vital part of the supply line for the soldiers who went across to the continent.

Jack, who did not see combat, always wonders why there's so much fuss over him since he figures men like his brother who saw combat deserved more.

In closing our thanks again to Jack Babcock our eldest survivor of WW! and our deepest sympaties to the family of Cpl Arnal who has paid the ultimate price for freedom.
