An Alberta-based soldier has been killed and another Canadian wounded by enemy fire in a rural area in southern Afghanistan, the military confirmed Tuesday.
Cpl. Michael Starker, a reservist with 15 Field Ambulance, was killed at about 11:45 a.m. local time Tuesday in a gun battle with militants while on foot patrol in the Pashmul region, in the Zharey district outside Kandahar city.
The two soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to Kandahar Airfield, where Starker was pronounced dead. Details were not immediately available about his age or hometown.
The injured soldier is in good condition and stable, the military said.
Brig.-Gen. Guy Laroche, commander of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, paid tribute to the soldier, and said his comrades remain dedicated to the task of bringing peace, security and prosperity to the people of Afghanistan.
We have lost a fine soldier today and our thoughts are with his family and friends, Laroche said in Kandahar.
A Veteran Soldier of the RCASC also has passed to the advance party. CWO Bill Courtice (Ret.) lost his battle with cancer on Monday. A full military Funeral will be held for him in Camp Borden on Friday 9 May. Condolences to his wife and family, as well as his Loved ones and Comrades.
Bill was a Soldier Apprentice and leaves many fond memories amongst those who knew him and served with him. Whether in Canada, Germany or anywhere else on this planet.
Bill in 1976 with his infamous Grin. Farewell my Friend.
So as the piper prepares to send home yet another young soldier from Afghanistan. We must as a Nation remember all those who have served or are presently serving in the Service of Canada.
