Flag Day 15 Feb."not a lot of people know that" as Michael Caine would say.

Febuary 15, 1965 the soldiers of all the forts in Soest, Werl and Hemer marched to the Flag pole to witness the unveiling of our New Flag. As well as all military posts worldwide. Opinions were divided at that time, however our Flag has not only grown in Stature it is well respected throughout the world. It is seen as a symbol of peace, happiness and safety.

The colours of Red and White were decreed by King George the fifth in 1921 to be the official colours of Canada. In heraldry Red stands for Valour and the scarifices of men and women serving in the military. White is for Peace and purity. So as many soldiers will always remember where they were serving on that chilly day in 1965 (unless they were in Cyprus or the Middle east) where it was warm. We as proud Canadians celebrate Flag day each Feb 15th since 1966.

Today is Friday so please show your support for the troops by wearing something red as a symbol of support.

Robby.... You mentioned that it was warm in Cyprus on that first Flag Day... I remember helping Sergeant Don Mattocks, C Int C, to raise the new flag at Nicosia Zone Headquarters and it was wet and cold... battledress tunic cold. As we were a relatively small multi-national unit there was no parade... just two guys out on a balcony taking down the Red Ensign for the last time and raising the new Maple Leaf flag for the first time. I also remember to celebrate the occasion the Canadian High Commissioner arranged for all Canadian troops in Cyprus to have hamburgers, hot dogs and Canadian beer, items which we had not enjoyed for months. Where has the time gone? Nil Sine Labore. Bev
