Quebec Gunner Killed by IED.....L'Artilleur Québécois Tué par IED

It is with HEAVY HEART that I read of Gunner Dion killed today in Afghanistan.I feel sure that this is not the way that Canadians wanted to end the year 2007.

To Gunner Dion's family brothers in arms and loved ones our sympathies and condolences on this tragic day.

MA'SUM GHAR, Afghanistan - Canada's military commander in Afghanistan says the mission must continue even as soldiers mourn the loss Sunday of yet another colleague who died from a roadside bomb.

We are saddened by the tragic loss of our brother. We will mourn him, we will honour him and we will remember him, Brig.-Gen. Guy Laroche said after announcing that 27-year-old gunner Jonathan Dion had been killed earlier in the day.

While doing so, we will carry on with our mission of helping the people of Afghanistan find peace and stability, with the same resolve as we have always shown.

Dion was killed and four other soldiers injured when their light armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb early Sunday in southern Afghanistan.

Dion was a gunner with the 5th Regiment d'Artillerie legere du Canada from Val-d'Or, Que.

The explosion happened shortly after 9 a.m. west of Kandahar Air Field, where the soldiers were headed to spend the new year.

Five people were evacuated by helicopter to hospital at Kandahar Air Field, where Dion was pronounced dead.

Laroche said the injuries of the other soldiers are considered non-life threatening.

They notified their families themselves and one of them has already been released form the hospital, he said.

In a statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he was deeply saddened by Dion's death, and wished the four injured soldiers a speedy recovery.

These brave Canadian soldiers were helping bring hope to a population that has seen much hardship, Harper said.

We will not forget the sacrifice made by Gunner Dion while working to make life better for others.

These Canadian soldiers were working to provide security and help create the conditions needed to improve the lives of the people of Afghanistan.

Dion's death marks the 74th time a Canadian soldier has died in combat in Afghanistan.

Most of those fatalities were the result of improvised explosive devices.

Peut il se reposer dans la main de Dieu .May he rest in the hand of God..........

To our four wounded soldiers, we wish them a full and speedy recovery...... nos quatre soldats blesss, nous leur souhaitons une rcupration complte et rapide.

    Where is Harper
    - June 29, 2010 at 08:50:45

My condolences to the Dion family for the loss of a Hero. Coming from a Military family I'm in full support of our men and women who so bravely go to war torn countries to keep the Peace. But when so many of our young people are coming home in caskets, I think it's time Stephen Harper made a New Years Resolution and brought our troops home. Or let him put on some fatigues and be a Peace Keeper. I'm sure he wouldn't like the work nor the salary! No price is to high when we watch a casket being loaded onto a plane. We're not being Peace Keepers, but slowly having the Keepers of Peace, coming home in pieces. Make a New Years Resolution and let Harper know to step up to the plate and be a man, and stop sucking up to Bush. I fully support our troops , but one life is one too many!
