Remembrance Day 11Nov Lest We Forget
Good day Faithful Blog readers. First off I would like to Thank the 150 plus Islanders that took part in the Red Rally. A vast improvement over the small number in June. Perhaps word of this conflict is getting through. A word from Various Mothers with regards to their feelings and emotions regarding serving Sons.Brought rounds of applause from the gathering. Well done again to Charlene McInnis and her hard working troop of Volunteers from the Miltary Families centre. Despite the fact that the majority of Islanders from the previous Rota have returned their are still Islanders amongst the Regular forces and 6 on board HMCS CHarlottetown. So as Islanders and Canadians we still have a local interest as well as Global interest in the military.
I met a former Medic John Yeo who is a veteran from PEI who was on the commissioning crew of HMCS CHarlottetown, as well as the returning vets, a few local dignitaries were in the crowd. Conservative party members were in attendance yet I identified no one from the Liberals nor the Greens etc. This shows me who supports the troops in their dangerous missions.
A book titled On Assignment in Afghanistan...Maritimers at War was brought to my Attention By Bonnie MacFarlane of Gagetown. It is avaiable on the Net and in Local Bookstores a nice little Christmas gift The I number is ISBN:13 978-1-55109-6407 a book that is full of Photos of your troops at work and rest .
Todays Guardian celebrates the story of a Veteran from the Infamous Devil's Brigade of the Second World war. The full story is available in hard copy Guardians and on the net copy.well worth the read.
Mr Lawrence Junior Durant an 83 Year old Veteran and his cousin Ray Durant were the only two family members to serve with this one-of-a-kind military unit, most infamous for conducting silent night raids on the German lines their faces smeared with black boot paste leaving casualties in their wake and a special calling card that read: Das dicke ende kommt noch! (The worst is yet to come!). Mr Durant says of his time with the Devils Brigade. You just did your thing, Whatever you had to do, you did it. To these men and all the vets of previous wars and conflicts I salute you. The current generation of Canadians serving in the military are doing you proud carrying on the traditions that you created over the years.
Last but by no means least an article which may show you yet another difficulty our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and RCMP face whether in an area of conflict or on a Ministerial visit. The Female Suicide Bomber a very good read if this link does not work then please cut and paste into your browser.
