Once again we hear of the disgraceful practice of firms.employers etc not holding positions for our men and women who volunteer for Canada's reserves. Both the UK and The US have Federal laws in place which guarantee the rights of the serving men and women to return to their civilian wage earning positions.
So Canada shoulda had this law in place, coulda had this law in place and woulda had this law in place had they thought of the concerns of Canadians returning from active duties.
An officer serving in Kabul is due to return to Newfoundland soon having completed his tour of duty. His job at an auto dealership is not available to him anymore. How is this soldier who has done his duty for Canada and Canadians supposed to meet his mortgage payments, food and basics for his family.
Major Wallace Noseworthy who was a senior manager in an auto dealership in Stephenville. Advised his bosses that he would be serving in Afghanistan for a period. He was told that his job would not be kept for him. Thereby making him unemployed upon his return home. Shame on that dealership and their owner who has no concern for soldiers serving on behalf of the world. Many returning reserve soldiers must be guaranteed the full employment that they had prior to shipping out.
The banks adjusted their Mortgage protection insurance for the unfortunate soldiers who paid the ultimate price of service. They lost their lives and now the families at least have their homes secured. An extremely small price to pay for our brave men and women.
Perhaps Prime Minister Harper, MND Gordon O'Conner and the caucus can discuss this item during their PEI retreat.
Apparently Manitoba Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia have a provincial act in place to retain the jobs for their reserve servicemen and women.
Well done these 3 Provinces.
REMEMBER WEAR RED in support of our Troops.
