General Hillier coined it! "The strength behind the Uniform"

What a great heartwarming speech from Canada's CDS General Rick Hillier. On Canadian Armed forces day.

This 3rd of july has been preceeded by much heartbreak for families as the latest fallen heroes return home in flag draped caskets.

Gen.Hillier told the crowd and the newest young soldiers that the military is a family and that they will and do look after one another. He praised the wives, husbands, sons, daughters and boy friend, girlfriends, brothers, sisters left at home as their loved one does his/her duty for Queen and Country. He called them The Strength Behind the Uniform this is so true.

He declared that 2007 should be known as the year of the Military Family. Well done Sir,Canada salutes you and your fine troops wherever they may be serving.

Canada's top soldier launched a new fund on Tuesday to which ordinary Canadians can donate to help military families in need across the country.

Gen. Rick Hillier, Canadian Forces chief of defence staff, launched the CDS Military Families Fund at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. More than $100,000 has been given to the fund since early April when donations began to be accepted.

Hillier said the fund will provide special assistance to military families when they need financial help that would not be covered by existing programs and services.

Military families, he said, make sacrifices when their family members are overseas and they need support from the Canadian public.

Birthdays and first steps are missed. These families fear the evening news . Fear a knock on the door or a late-night telephone call in ways other families cannot understand.

They carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, he said.

Hillier said his wife has a fridge magnet that reads: Military wives are like tea-bags. You only know how strong they are when they are in hot water.

My husband was a Canadian soldier for 27 years starting in 1959.What this officer has stated is so true. Our marriage and 3 children survived TheCongo,Cyprus,Egypt as well as many training courses. The children are all happy well adjusted members of society and are all working and 2 have families of their own. So through the good times and the not so good times we wives do our bit and support husband and family. We need to reassess the difficulties in both Iraq and Afghanistan and stop our soldiers from dying. A concerned wife of a now deceased veteran.
