What next ! ! ! ! what with our opposition parties calling for immediate withdrawal. The Afghan Parliament further wishes to tie the hands of our serving soldiers.
A copy of the report from the CBC:
Afghan legislators passed a bill Tuesday calling on the government to open dialogue with Taliban fighters and prohibiting international forces from firing their weapons and launching raids, unless they come under attack first.
The bill was passed by a voice vote in the upper house. It would also need to be approved by the lower house and signed by President Hamid Karzai before coming law.
The bill said negotiations should only be held with Afghan Taliban militants, not Pakistani Taliban fighters or al-Qaeda operatives. It said the aim would be to persuade the militants to give up their fight against the government.
The bill would also prohibit international forces from launching military operations, unless they are attacked or have first consulted with the Afghan army, government or police.
If the President of Afghanistan signs this bill into law,not only will it decrease the chance for NATO to defeat the Taliban.....But it will give the Taliban a much greater edge Tactically. This is not what our Generals or indeed our troops need at this time in the Afghan Campaign.
It is reminiscent of the UN card that peacekeepers carry which say do not fire until you confirm you are being fired upon. Announce in a loud voice 3 times I am UN, I am UN , I am UN . Only after these actions were taken. Were UN Troops allowed to protect themselves. This in itself is ludricous, but peacekeeping missions are far different than this operation.
